Adventure awaits within the pages of Ether. Boone Dias travels the alternate universe created from the runoff of all of the stories we tell. At his side is Violet Bell (a faerie warrior), Big Glum (the protector of the entrance to the Ether), and Grandor (a minotaur who Dias and company sprung from jail). They are on a mission to stop dangerous copper golems from entering the real world and creating chaos and destruction.
Beyond that, the bigger mission for Dias is to prove that magic doesn’t exist. Everything, even in the Ether, happens because of science. He is an adventuring Bill Nye – the Indiana Jones of chemistry. But he carries around the biggest flaw, a blind spot, one that in a side story we see could be his ultimate undoing: his ego. He believes himself to be so right about everything, that no one else could possibly be correct. Aside from the golems and whoever is behind them, and himself, his next biggest enemy and in this case the ticking clock he’s up against, is really, quite ingenious – he can’t eat the food in the Ether, so eventually he’s going to have to go back for sustenance, and since time passes more quickly in our world than in the Ether…
In our world, Boone Dias has had to essentially leave behind his family to make his trips to the Ether. It’s made for some incredibly emotional moments, and for every moment he remains in the Ether being heroic, I can only think about what is going to happen when he returns to reality. As smart as Dias is, he’s also incredibly stupid.
In this issue especially, David Rubín is having a hell of a time. Not only does he get the enjoyment of bringing the zany world of the Ether alive, including the stunning golems themselves, but there’s a passage in which we get a glimpse into the subconscious of the different characters and all bets are off. Rubín, like Kindt, is a man of many talents. They are a perfect fit.
I have no clever way to lead into saying that you should be reading this comic, but yeah, you should be. These are two creators you need to be following, especially when they are working together.
