In the world of international affairs, secrets are a major commodity. That is especially true when there’s war involved and seems to ring even more true for Marcus King, a mysterious man with a lot of truths buried. When we first meet Marcus, things aren’t going so well. While we don’t really get to see much of what’s really going on here just yet, it’s looking pretty likely that we’re going to get to see Marcus do some pretty crazy things, and it’s only going to get more ramped up from here.
Writer Alex de Campi has been getting things done in this industry for a long time, and her style lends itself perfectly to this type of story. De Campi always felt like she had a sort of Grindhouse style to her work, full of ultra-violence, explosions, and just general mayhem. It probably helps that she did write an adaptation of Grindhouse, something that really works well with the aesthetic of her previous work. Bankshot is no different, as even in this first issue there’s plenty of explosive action to go with what looks to be an interesting story of betrayal, secrets, and gunfire. I really love de Campi’s writing style, and a thriller like this shows a ton of promise.
With de Campi comes the stellar art team consisting of ChrisCross on pencils with Snakebite Cortez on colors. While I was unfamiliar with this team prior to this book, I was incredibly impressed. This is the type of story where creating a visual dynamic is essential to the story, and so far, both ChrisCross and Cortez have really hit the mark. The characters are dynamic, the action hits in the all of the right areas, and with several jumps from the past to the present, everything is clear, concise, and exciting.
One more art note here: De Campi also did the lettering, and while lettering isn’t always given a spotlight, it really shines here. With the use of some really great lettering effects to really bring the tone home, it feels like this kind of book really gets a boost with this kind of added value.
I’m not sure what the story is just yet, but everything from this first issue leads me to believe that it’s going to be great. I’m really excited to see what this team has to offer for what could be a pretty fun title.
