Dark Horse Comics is one of the most well-known publishers in the business, and one that is known for being willing to work outside the typical structure. When it comes to mini-series, this is especially true, and Spell on Wheels is no exception.
A genre-hopping romp, this series mixes a female-driven supernatural crime story and puts it on the road, as three witches trek down the East Coast to find the person who stole a bunch of their magical items and get them back.
Creators Kate Leth and Megan Levens have created something special here, building something that hasn’t really been done in the world of comics before. While there have been more and more female-fronted series, not often is it that we get a comic book that features such a wonderful cast of women as their leads. Being a female-created series, this seems to be very important for both the creative team and for the series as a whole, something that shows in each page.
Leth has been building an audience over the last few years, with a reputation as both a talented writer and a stellar artist. She and Levens have really built a fantastic world here, and while we didn’t get to see as much of it as I would have liked, it’s one that feels lived-in, giving a sense of realism to a world built on magic and fantasy. Given the length of the series, the story was focused more on the ladies of the series, but given the potential of the setting, I would have liked to see more world-building.
Anyone who has spoken to me about comic book artists knows how big a fan I am of Megan Levens. Her work is incredibly unique, and there’s something about her style that brings a lot of warmth into the characters. In this series, she really adds to the atmosphere with dynamic characters, an interesting environment, and some fascinating elements to make this magical story come to live.
While we won’t be getting anything more from this series, sometimes that works for the best. This being a mini-series makes it a special read. While it isn’t as explorative as I would have liked, there is so much heart to this series. Bringing out such terrific female characters and allowing them to work inside this world that they inhabit so well makes this a really fun read.
