The Dragon Age franchise lives on, as Dark Horse Comics continues the tales of Thedas in the newest series based on the terrific gaming franchise. While this one is only adjacent to the franchise (unlike the previous series, Magekiller), this seems to be an added part of the lore, while Magekiller felt like it was directly from the canon of the games.

This series takes a deeper look into the world as a beloved knight and his squire, Vaea, arrive in the illustrious land of Kirkwall for an appointment with a familiar face for fans of the Dragon Age series. The visit has a second purpose, however, since Vaea has a second job aside from the illustrious role of squire. A thief, Vaea takes the time in Kirkwall to plan and execute a heist which, of course, takes a turn when the plans change in the middle of it.

This is a new series, but thanks to the landscape, it still feels familiar. While there isn’t as much of a connection to the games in Knight Errant, there’s still the vague sense of knowing the world and those within it. With a familiar (and playable) character from Inquisition, this new series is helped by that familiarity, keeping it tethered to the world and separating it from other typical fantasy series.

While I’m not familiar with the writing team, Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir did a good job of setting the tone and bringing us back into the world of Thedas. The jury is still out on this series as it pertains to the lore as a whole; it has a lot to live up to after Magekiller, which was pretty amazing.  Knight Errant could easily live up to its predecessor, though it’s too soon to tell.

The writers are helped by the terrific artwork from Fernando Heinz Furukawa and Michael Atiyeh, which really brought the book to life. It’s beautifully drawn, wonderfully colored, and really explores the life of those who live in the world of Thedas.

I’m still not sure about this series, but as a fan of Dragon Age as a franchise, I’m excited for the possibilities another run in this world could bring. With a familiar face, some new characters, and what looks to be a thrilling story, Knight Errant looks like it has the potential to be another stellar entry into a storied franchise.
