Cullen Bunn drops a Thanksgiving-sized helping of truth in Issue #18 of Harrow County, and the reveal isn’t even the best part of this issue.

Within the tale of Harrow County, another tale is being told. One of a family of dangerous magical beings and the history that came before the namesake of the series. One that, like a trail of bread crumbs, leads us again to where we are now.

The really, truly amazing thing about this series is that with every twist, it feels like the story is just now starting. It never loses its momentum, and it never finds an easy way forward. It continues to wrestle with complex issues while placing its young hero, a girl of 18, at the ever-shifting center. A girl born from a tree that a witch was buried under. A girl coming of age with far more to deal with than your typical teenager, much less your typical adult. A girl looking to find herself and decide what’s good and bad or right and wrong within that ever-expanding grey area in between. A girl whose stakes to make the right decisions continues to grow in both literal and abstract ways.

I have no idea where this story is going or for how long it will take Bunn to get us there, but there’s no rush. The journey with Harrow County is the payoff.
