Adventure Time #7 was published November 5, 2025, by Oni Press. It was written and drawn by Nick Winn, Derek Ballard, and Shawn Lee.
It’s not an exaggeration to claim that Adventure Time is one of the greatest pieces of American cartooning ever. It was long an arena for cartoonists, animators, and writers to explore the strangest reaches of their creativity. Originally created by Pendleton Ward and airing on Cartoon Network from 2010 to 2018, Adventure Time has been adapted into several spinoffs since its end in 2018. Much like its original cartoon, its comics, which were published concurrently to the TV show by Oni Press, is home to some of the weirdest and most passionate children’s comics published to date.
The original runs were written and drawn by Ryan North, Shelli Paroline, Branden Lam, and Mike Holmes among other talents, and preserved much of the playful sentiment of its original property. The current run’s main story is being written by Nick Winn and drawn by Shawn Lee with backup mini comics written and drawn by Derek Ballard. The team brings exciting new energy to the beloved cult classic comic series, along with much of the formal innovation which made the original series so great. Issue seven, which was published November 5, 2025, is one of the last issues in the current story arc, “Friends to the End,” and is made up of layouts depicting three distinct planes of existence across space and time occurring all at once, differentiated by color wash. It’s bold, and formally much more challenging than what you might come across from anything from the Big Two currently with the exception of Deniz Camp’s Martian Manhunter. Ballard’s mini comic backup stories are also excellent, drawn in his distinctive, joyful, surreal style to match the simultaneous unbridled ridiculousness and quaint cuteness of the world of Adventure Time.
The current run is chock-full of a high degree of creative excellence and effort that you don’t often see in monthly children’s comics, especially comic adaptations of other properties, including other Cartoon Network classics of the same generation.
