This comic is definitely a slow burn. Much of this first issue consists of narration from the main character, talking about how Something Is Happening™, but so far, we only get a few vague clues as to what it is.

Jesse left her hometown of Perennial Harbor when she was just 18 and never looked back. Now, nearly 50 years later, she’s looking back. Something has happened to make her return, in search of an old friend, Melody. She’s given herself one hour to roll into town, find Melody, and leave.

When she gets there, she finds that nothing has changed. No, seriously, not a single thing about the town has changed in 50 years. And Melody seems to be dealing with some problems of her own. Will she even remember Jesse after all this time? Can Jesse help her? Will either of them make it out of this eerie town alive?

Slow burns can be frustrating, especially in the beginning. It’s difficult to get invested in a story when it doesn’t seem like much is happening. Done well, though, once they get going, they can be something truly amazing. Then, when you go back, you realize that there was actually quite a bit happening, right from the start. You just couldn’t see it at first.

This comic gives you just enough to keep you on the hook and make you want to come back for the next issue. It’s clear, though, that there’s a lot more going on underneath the surface. It’s full of subtle details: Things that are presented, but not talked about just yet. Things that, as the title implies, you could miss if you blink.

My curiosity is officially piqued for this one. I’m looking forward to seeing how things unfold—and then going back, to see what details I missed the first time around.
