Kayla Kareem gets more than she bargained for when she interviews Mooby’s creator Nancy Goldruff for her podcast in Kevin Smith’s Quick Stops: Volume Two.

Nancy tells of a time of when she was a kindergarten teacher at St. Maria Goretti’s School in Highlands, New Jersey. Nancy is taken aback by a student in her class who had been bullied for his weight, prompting other kids to call him “Moobies.” Nancy comforts this child and later asks her husband Nick, the school’s art teacher, to make drawings of Mooby and friends. She gives these drawings to the bullied student to help him feel better. When the child’s mom sees the drawing, she decides to invest in the characters. Thus begins a story of murder and betrayal over some afternoon tea.

The mythology of the View Askewniverse continues in this next volume of Quick Stops. Smith is no stranger to writing side stories in the universe that he created thirty years ago, starting with Clerks. These comics and the Clerks cartoon have always felt like Smith’s version of the Star Wars Extended Universe, but canon as they were mostly written by Smith. That being said, this story takes some turns. Most Smith devotees will not be shocked, as they have seen the dark side of his writing with Tusk and Red State.

You may remember Kayla Kareem as one of Millie’s friends from Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. It’s a bit of a stretch if you haven’t kept up with newer View Askew movies, but is an effective way to get this story told. It also gives us a way to keep these smaller characters in the universe. Ahmed Raafat’s art continues with his style from the previous issue.

While the spectrum of what encapsulates a View Askew or Kevin Smith story keeps expanding, this comic may just be for diehard fans. I know it’s not always great from a sales perspective, but it’s fantastic for a long-time fan.
