Tony Fleecs returns with another amazing series paying homage to the horror genre. Presented in a similar manner to Fleecs’ fantastic Stray Dogs, with art that mirrors Walt Disney Studios’ and Don Bluth’s animation, Feral tells the story about three cats – Elsie, Patches, and Lord Fluffy Britches – who are picked up by animal control. When the truck transporting them drives off a mountain road, our cats are set on an adventure to find their way back home.

While being pursued by other animal control agents, Elsie and company come across animals who have red eyes and are foaming at the mouth. They can’t be reasoned with and viciously attack them upon sight. Patches saves Elsie during a confrontation with one of these animals, but is scratched in the process… something he keeps from Elsie and Lord Fluffy Britches. While our four-legged friends are unsure as to what disease is affecting those around them, there isn’t time for them to work out the clues. Things need to be figured out on their journey home.

Dropping an analogy on top of another analogy is no small feat, but Tony Fleecs does this flawlessly. Using a rabies outbreak as a way to explain zombies and how that virus works is nothing short of genius, even in its simplest and most obvious terms. A sort of Aristocats meets Dawn of the Dead, Feral does not pull its punches. Trish Forstner and Tone Rodriguez’s art does slightly deviate from that classic animated movie style emulated in Stray Dogs. Brad Simpson’s colors definitely do, but this is a louder and more intense story.
