Oni Press’ The Cult of Lamb is based on the Devolver Digital video game of the same name.

Lamb, the last of the heretics, is taken prisoner by the Four Bishops of the Old Faith: Leshy, Heket, Kallamar, and Shamuea. His execution will stop a yet-to-be-revealed prophecy and preserve the Old Faith. When the axe drops on Lamb’s neck, he is transported to a heaven-like afterlife. Lamb speaks to a deity bound by four chains named The One Who Waits.

The One Who Waits agrees to give Lamb life again in exchange for starting up a cult in his name. Thirsty for revenge, Lamb immediately agrees. The One Who Waits gives Lamb a demonic-looking crown and powers. Once resurrected, Lamb wreaks havoc in the Land of the Old Faith, mowing down anyone who serves the Four Bishops. His Kill Bill-like antics are temporarily halted when he comes across Ratau. The One Who Waits has tasked Ratau with guiding Lamb while building his cult by use of influence and indoctrination; however, Ratau becomes increasingly frustrated with Lamb, who would rather get revenge on the Old Faith and relax in the ruins than build a following for The One Who Waits.

This first issue does its part in adapting the tutorial of the video game and setting up Lamb’s journey, showcasing his allies and enemies and how his new powers can be used. Alex Paknadel’s writing drips with cheeky satire, highlighting a battle between dueling religions which gives some Spy vs. Spy vibes. While we know there is a war between The Old Faith and the One Who Wait’s pending rival sect, determining who is good or evil is left ambiguous. Each of the Four Bishop’s aspects correspond with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Followers of the Old Faith are sacrificing these cutesy creatures to satisfy the Four Bishops, but when the power gifted to Lamb flows through him, one way or another, everyone will be seeing red.
