Throughout comic book history, readers have seen faraway places and heroes of all shape and size. What happens when you combine Indiana Jones and a post- apocalyptic future? How about spotlighting a corner of the globe that’s not normally the focus of a comic book story, so unique that the very creators of the book come from that unexplored part of the Earth? Can a new mythology grow from characters and situations which are out of the ordinary?
Image Comics’ New Masters series tells the story of an Earth which has been transformed by the cataclysmic event brought on by an alien arrival. The planet has been transformed both environmentally and socially. Gone are North American and European nations replaced by Asia and Africa, which have become interplanetary space ports. Exotic fuels populate hidden parts of the planet and are sought by scavengers and treasure hunters.
In the first issue of New Masters, readers are introduced to young adventurer Ola and her robotic sidekick as they attempt to acquire Obsidium – a rare material. Like any great introduction, Ola is in the middle of a dangerous mission that inevitably does not go as planned. From there is the introduction to this new world and characters that include governments, politicians, and scavengers. A race is on for the rarest of materials.
New Masters is written and drawn by African creators Shobo Coker and Shof Coker. The book is intended as a sci-fi love letter to the African continent. The story it tells is fun, exciting, and intriguing. There are heroes, villains, and all-out action. The book is highly enjoyable on every level. This comic is a labor of love, and it shows.
