After Sarah and Miss LaFleur find Arlen Quincy hiding in the walls of his own house, it becomes apparent that he faked his own death. But why?
It doesn’t take long for our female detectives to figure out he’s responsible for at least two of the deaths in the house. Severin was strangled, and Reginald fell in a drunken stupor, but what about Eckard? His body was desiccated which leads Sarah to deduce he was felled by some sort of supernatural entity. Arlen is not initially forthcoming nor repentant of his deeds which makes the ending rather satisfying.
The paranormal takes center stage in this last issue, as Sarah and Miss LaFleur unpack the Arlen’s rather devious and insidious plot. I would have liked to have this series to have been six issues instead of five, as the last issue was jam packed with explanations for everything. For me, it was a little too much all at once, and I think one more issue would have allowed the hints and clues, especially about the “little people,” to coalesce more organically; however, I loved how some of the characters were linked to Arlen’s backstory. The themes of racial justice were nicely integrated which I appreciated coming from a period piece.
All in all, a fun and enjoyable story.
