The following is an interview with Maria Laquerre-Diego (LMFT, RPT-S) regarding the inaugural launch of the virtual Geek Play Therapy Summit, hosted by A New Hope Therapy Center on May 3-4, 2024. In this interview, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon chats with Laquerre-Diego about exploring the intersection of geek culture and mental well-being, the various activities and programming which attendees can anticipate from the event, and more!

Barbra Dillon, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief: You will soon be kicking off the inaugural Geek Play Therapy Summit this May, bringing together mental health professionals and enthusiasts to explore the intersection of geek culture and mental well-being. For those who may be unfamiliar, what was the inspiration for this multi-day event?

Maria Laquerre-Diego: The inspiration for the Geek Play Therapy Summit stems from recognizing the profound impact that geek culture can have on mental well-being. As a passionate advocate for both mental health awareness and geek culture, I noticed a significant overlap between the two realms. Many individuals find solace, community, and even therapeutic value in various aspects of geek culture, whether through gaming, literature, comics, or other forms of media.

Understanding this intersection, I wanted to create a platform where mental health professionals and enthusiasts could come together to explore and celebrate these connections. The Geek Play Therapy Summit aims to bridge the gap between geek culture and mental health by providing a space for meaningful discussions, workshops, and presentations. By doing so, we hope to not only destigmatize mental health issues within geek communities but also highlight the potential therapeutic benefits that engagement with geek culture can offer.

Ultimately, the goal of the summit is to foster a greater understanding of how geek culture can contribute to mental well-being and to equip mental health professionals with innovative approaches to support their clients. I believe that by embracing and harnessing the power of geek culture, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals struggling with mental health challenges.

BD: The summit will feature an incredible lineup of workshops, interactive panels, and thought-provoking discussions. What can you share with us about the speakers and interactive workshops that will await attendees?

From therapists specializing in incorporating board games in counseling to social workers who incorporate Disney princesses and the feminist theory in clinical practice, our speakers bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.

Overall, our goal is to provide attendees with a dynamic and enriching experience that combines insightful discussions, practical workshops, and opportunities for networking and connection. We believe that by bringing together mental health professionals and enthusiasts in this unique setting, we can spark new ideas, inspire collaborations, and ultimately make a positive impact on the well-being of individuals within geek communities.
