As Halloween is fast approaching, the Fanbase Press staff and contributors decided that there was no better way to celebrate this horrifically haunting holiday than by sharing our favorite scary stories! Be they movies, TV shows, video games, novels, or any other form of entertainment, members of the Fanbase Press crew will be sharing their “scariest” stories each day leading up to Halloween. We hope that you will enjoy this sneak peek into the terrors that frighten Fanbase Press!
Red Rooms is a 2023 Canadian film described as a crime drama or thriller, but it is pure psychological terror that true horror fanatics will not want to miss. First available to stream in late 2024, I knew from the moment I watched it that it is, hands-down, the best horror film this decade.
Fashion model Kelly-Anne is one of several attendees of the trial of accused triple-murderer Ludovic Chevalier. His kills were broadcast across the dark web using a “red room,” a place where people on the dark web watch snuff films for money. Early in the trial, she meets Clementine, one of Chevalier’s “fans,” and from there, the movie travels in all different unexpected directions. There are some subtitles off and on throughout, but do not let that deter you.
This is a movie you will want to go into blind. Do not watch a trailer; don’t read about it online. You’ll be better off for it. The movie blends the obsession with true crime into a truly disturbing work of art. With gore and violence completely off screen, it accomplishes its goals through sound, reactions, and ominous exchanges. One scene still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. It will leave you stunned and reeling long after the credits roll, and it is a film that leaves plenty of discussion among horror fans. I cannot recommend this one enough, and it will absolutely complete your bone-chilling Halloween watch parties.
