Project #1: Iron Barge: Book Two

What it’s about: In a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas ruled by the animals left behind, the Iron Barge is the craft responsible for transporting dangerous criminals to the penal colony known as the Ark. A lifelong sentence at an inescapable prison is a fate usually reserved only for the world’s most dangerous criminals, but a pirate named Porter is mysteriously traveling to the Ark by choice. After the Iron Barge came under attack by Porter’s pirate crew, the Barge’s first mate Brook found herself traveling on foot through the perilous world of the Meadows, determined to deliver Porter to the Ark herself. But the pair didn’t make it far before becoming entangled in the complicated web of organized crime in the kingdom known as Stripes’ Town…

The Iron Barge Book 2 picks up moments later, when Brook and Porter are forced to face down Stripes himself, a ravenous white tiger eager for some decent red meat. Stripes won’t be the only block on their dangerous journey: they’ll have to face harsh desert sands, outrun Porter’s crew, and evade the clutches of a high-tech empire who seem to know exactly who Porter is. The varied kingdoms of the Meadows contain surprises around every corner; and the most surprising thing of all might be what our two mismatched companions learn about each other on their journey…

American Dreams 8

Project #2: American Dreams #1-8

What it’s about
: For several years now, readers have read the beginning journey of one Jake Gold, a Jewish immigrant in 1900s New York City who gains powers from a Thomas Edison experiment gone awry. The five issue first arc covers his origins and his early fights against enemies such as the warlock Aleister Crowley and the bruiser Amalek. It also brought him into contact with allies such as the magician Harry Houdini, the journalist Nellie Bly, and the activist/anarchist Emma Goldman. Set against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, Jake must decide how best to use his powers to protect the American Dream for everyone.

And now, he’s needed again. With new and returning villains on the horizon, Liberty is also going to need some new allies in his fight to protect the American Dream for all Americans of all backgrounds.

Continuing on from the pulse-pounding cliff hanger in issue 6, Issue 7 continues the battle in Union Square, and the consequences that comes soon after! Issue 8 continues our adventure as the devious Crowley pushes his machinations onto New York, using the climate of fear and suspicion to his advantage!

Can Liberty and his new allies combat a menace in the shadows who now has his hands on the levers of power?

SHRUB KS Header CF

Project #4: Shrub: The Collected Edition

What it’s about
: GLAAD Media Award-winning and Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated publisher and media outlet Fanbase Press is proud to announce Shrub, an 8-issue Graphic Medicine series which will be crowdfunded by the publisher on Kickstarter.

In this middle grade adventure, readers will join Shrub who is, well… a shrub… for a cross-country trip to Hollywood! Join Shrub and a grieving brother and sister as they hit the open road in search of connection. On their journey, pit stops, wacky plant enthusiasts, uprooting, and re-routing abound.

The series was created and written by Emmy Award nominee Shane Portman (Tumble Leaf, Shape Island), illustrated by Andy Alves (Cosmic Cadets), colored by Sophia Du and Celia FitzGerald, lettered by Oceano Ransford (Eisner Award-nominated Rikki), and with consultation from comics librarian Moni Barrette.

Shrub explores the various ways that we allow grief to take root, inspired by writer Shane Portman’s experience with the loss of his father. The series features “Letting Grief Take Root” essays written by individuals with a personal and/or professional connection to grief who relate Shrub’s story to their own lived experience.
