When it comes to supporting women’s rights and talented creators, Fanbase Press is always happy to lend a hand. Thus, we implore comic and horror fans in the Los Angeles area to come out for the cause and attend the ONE MEAN MONSTER ZINE party (where ALL proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood) taking place this Saturday, September 22, 2018, at the darkly beautiful curiosity shop, Memento Mori!
ONE MEAN MONSTER ZINE is a full-color monster and horror zine with a limited edition 300 copy run. Inside, the zine features over 40 artists and writers, including Erika Angel, Stefania Stephany Folsom, Bill Rude, Gaby Ruiz, Mister Sam Shearon, Jack Rossi, Guity Rafik, Daniel J Garibay, Joe Mac, Douglas Wicker, Theo Radomski, Ben Meares and Riley Schmitz, Clive Barker, Chris Wyatt, Sarah Wilkinson, Nigel Sade, Nolan Lemos, Elisa Victoria, The Ghouligans, Jini Kim, Sideshow Monkey, Dave Hartman, Steven Shea, Mae Catt, Song Riddle, Jenny Carbajal, Liz Rand, Chris Thorne, Chris Grine, Erick Salomon, Gris Grimley, Allan Graves, and Fanbase Press President Bryant Dillon! The layout design of the zine is by Jose Macasocal, Jr., and Shearon also provides cover art.
ONE MEAN MONSTER ZINE is the brainchild of comic book and animation writer Gavin Hignight (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars Resistance) who serves as editor and a contributor to the zine. Hignight had the following to say in regards to the motivation and purpose behind the project:
“In the last couple of years, I’ve seen blatant attacks on Planned Parenthood and felt these efforts to shut the organization down are, at the core, also attacks on women’s rights, especially those who are financially on the margins. Frustrated and looking for a way to help, I thought about all the creative individuals I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in my own creative career. Inspired by the punk rock DYI culture of zine culture from my youth, I thought, this is it, a perfect excuse to finally publish a zine. I reached out to a group of writers and artists, and that had a ripple effect allowing me to reach awesome creators I didn’t know personally. We all came together to make a difference.”
So, why monsters? What made Hignight choose that specific focus for the zine he was putting together? “Because I love monsters,” Hignight states. “Everyone who contributed to this zine loves monsters! We love monsters and want to combat the work of real-world monsters who are trying to take away rights and healthcare from others.”
ONE MEAN MONSTER ZINE costs just $10.00, and those who purchase the book will get get plenty of monsters, horror, macabre, and the additional benefit of supporting a worthy cause. Individuals in attendance will be able to purchase copies of ONE MEAN MONSTER ZINE, meet some of the creators involved, and enjoy snacks, libations, and music, as well as FX artists.
