Fanbase Press’ coverage of the 2018 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards continues with the “Countdown to the Eisners” series.  From Monday, June 4, through Friday, July 13, 2018, Fanbase Press will highlight each of the Eisner Awards’ 31 nomination categories, providing comic book industry members and readers alike the opportunity to learn more about the nominees and their work.  Stay tuned for Fanbase Press’ continued coverage of the Eisner Awards, including live coverage of the ceremony at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 20.

Initiated as a new Eisner Award category in 1992, the Best Humor Publication category honors the comics and graphic novels that make us laugh the most!  From Bone and Milk & Cheese to Darth Vader and Son and Vader’s Little Princess, the winners of this Eisner Award category keep readers cracking up year after year.

Here are the 2018 Eisner Award nominees for the Best Humor Publication category:

Baking with Kafka by Tom Gauld (Drawn & Quarterly)

Created by critically acclaimed British cartoonist Tom Gauld and published by Drawn & Quarterly, Baking with Kafka combines the best of Gauld’s weekly comic strips from the newspaper, The Guardian.  According to the publisher’s website, “From sarcastic panels about the health hazards of being a best-selling writer to a list of magical items for fantasy writers (such as the Amulet of Attraction, which summons mainstream acceptance, Hollywood money, and fresh coffee), Gauld’s cartoons are timely and droll—his trademark British humor, impeccable timing, and distinctive visual style sets him apart from the rest.”

Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 by Tom King, Lee Weeks, and Byron Vaughn (DC)

Pairing together two very unlikely protagonists, Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 is written by Tom King, illustrated by Lee Weeks and Byron Vaughn, and published by DC Comics.  After a chance meeting, Elmer Fudd finds himself with an unhealthy obsession for Bruce Wayne, going so far as to stalk the Dark Knight throughout the dark alleys of Gotham.  Combining side-splitting humor with a dark noir backdrop, the Looney Toons / Batman crossover, IGN notes that the comic has “a great deal of emotional weight beneath the humor and bizarre trappings . .  they make a concerted effort to cast both men as kindred spirits who share far more in common than one would ever expect.”

The Flintstones by Mark Russell, Steve Pugh, Rick Leonardi, and Scott Hanna (DC)

DC Comics wants you to know that this comic series is The Flintstones like you’ve never seen them before. Critically praised for its satirical take on Hanna-Barbera’s classic characters, The Flintstones has been described as “topical,” “the most unexpected achievement in current comics,” and “a comic with an honest-to-god stance on the underpinnings of civilization and the true meaning of life.”

Rock Candy Mountain by Kyle Starks (Image)

Written and illustrated by Eisner Award-nominated creator Kyle Starks, Rock Candy Mountain is an action-comedy series that invites readers to enter the magical world . . . of hobos.  According to publisher Image Comics’ website, “The world’s toughest hobo is searching through post-World War II America for the mythological Rock Candy Mountain, and he’s going to have to fight his way to get there.”  In an interview with The Oregonian, Starks noted that, “What I didn’t realize along the way [is] that it would become the most emotional thing I’d ever write. Or that it would cover so much ground. It’s tragic; it’s funny; it does the exact job I wanted it to do, and Jackson kills a ton of Nazis and that generally makes any book better.”

Wallace the Brave by Will Henry (Andrews McMeel)

Created by cartoonist Will Henry, Wallace the Brave is a comic strip that follows a little boy named Wallace, his best friend Spud, and the new girl in town (Amelia) as they maneuver their way through the small town of Snug Harbor.  Originally distributed daily through GoComics, the comic collection was published by Andrews McMeel and was noted by Huffington Post as “a little taste of classic comics from the past.”
