Fanbase Press’ coverage of the 2019 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards continues with the “Countdown to the Eisners” series. From Wednesday, May 29, through Wednesday, July 10, 2019, Fanbase Press will highlight each of the Eisner Awards’ 31 nomination categories, providing comic book industry members and readers alike the opportunity to learn more about the nominees and their work. Stay tuned for Fanbase Press’ continued coverage of the Eisner Awards, including live coverage of the ceremony at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 19.


The Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism Eisner category began in 2008 and is awarded to comic book news and journalist publications. Past recipients include The Comics Journal, Comic Book Resources, and Alter Ego.

Here are the 2019 Eisner Award nominees for the Best Comics-Related Periodical / Journalism category:

Back Issue 942

Back Issue!, edited by Michael Eury (TwoMorrows)

Per the TwoMorrows website, Back Issue!’s goal is to celebrate the comic books of the ’70s, ’80s and the present. Founded and edited by vanguard comic book editor and writer Mike Eury, the first issue of Back Issue! was released in November 2003 and has been published eight times a year ever since. Each issue hosts a variety of writers, conducting interviews with luminaries in the comic book world, histories of various comic series, posting news, and showcasing old school art, as well as other columns. Despite print editions selling out, publisher TwoMorrows offers the back catalog of Back Issue! in electronic format.

The Columbus Scribbler is a new endeavor in the comics periodicals industry, having only two issues under their belt: one in the fall 2018 and the other in the spring 2019. Available for free in PDF format at The Columbus Scribbler website, the series takes a local approach approach to comics, seeking to promote local (based in Columbus, OH) events, creators, festivals, etc. Issues of The Columbus Scribbler feature interviews, essays, short comic strips, and spotlights of local events.

Comicosity is a comics news website that focuses on both underrated creators and marginalized voices within the industry, fighting for better representation. Editor-in-chief Aaron Long stepped down in the summer of 2019, being superseded by Matt Santori who has continued the vision of Comicosity.

LAAB Magazine is an annual periodical that focuses on identity in comics via interviews, discussions, criticism, and art. The magazine was created by Ronald Wimberly via a successful Kickstarter campaign and has seen one issue thus far.
