Looking for something directed more for the adults in the room? Something erotic, steamy, and a bit twisted? Then, Brian Azzarello and Maria Llovet bring to you Faithless. Faith is a 20-something who hangs out at coffee shops and studies occult stuff, spells, witchcraft – the usual. She also can’t get off when pleasuring herself. So, what is the issue? At this point, it’s hard to say, because while this first issue is about Faith, it’s more about Faith meeting Poppy.

Poppy is a ball of unpredictability. Her dark whimsy begins to almost immediately pull Faith out of her comfort zone. Like a lot of ’80s films that take place in the city (Martin Scorcese’s After Hours comes to mind.), there is a sense of adventure that comes with never knowing who you’ll meet and exploring the things in the city that hide just under the surface. Basically, letting fate take its course; you’re just along for the ride. Discovering this side of the city, a new side of yourself, is almost like exploring someone else for the first time. There’s a giddy sensuality about it, and Azzarello and Maria Llovet (the artist) nail that feeling beautifully.

As exciting as stepping into that world can be, those mysteries that seem so attractive can also be warning signs, and by the end of the first issue, that darkness begins to tip its hat.

I really like Maria Llovet’s colors; the city feels alive with different areas taking on different personalities and different story beats taking advantage of various hues to create that sensuality that I was speaking of – soft colors, tempting, safe.

This is a really intriguing first issue and not at all what I expected. I like to be surprised, and I’m curious to see where this series will go next.
