Who doesn’t love Rick and Morty?!? It’s like, the most popular thing ever, in all of time and space. Season 3 Episode 3, affectionately titled “Pickle Rick,” was an explosive moment in pop culture and basically pervaded over all hip party conversations for a hot minute. This comic book is basically like all of that stuff, but different!
This exciting addition to the Rick and Morty library of content is published by Oni Press, Inc. and written by Delilah S. Dawson. I checked IMDb, and Delilah does not even write for the show! Neat! This means Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland (creators of Rick and Morty) trusted their beloved franchise to someone else. It’s weird. It’s wild. It’s full of interesting discrepancies that spun my head in a complete one-eighty.
If you are a fan of the show, then you will notice some odd choices right off the bat. The issue and the episode are basically the same, with some interesting changes. For instance, a conversation that takes place early on in the episode happens here…
But, in the comic it happens here…
Then, later in the episode, a cat enters to bother Rick…
But, in the comic, they changed it to a bird…
However, in both the comic and the episode, they reference how birds think pickles are snakes. This kind of revisionist content happens throughout the issue. It was like Mandela Effect-ing yourself, on purpose, in real time. Two narratives now exist in your head, revolving around two separate pieces of Rick and Morty.
This ends up being one of the most compelling reasons to pick up the issue. It’s a must have if you are a Rick and Morty fan, for sure. There is plenty to consider well after finishing the issue, and I certainly hope that there is more to come.
