‘Legend of Novo: Witch Hunt’ – Comic Book Review

As time travel stories go, Legend of Novo is fairly simple and straightforward, at least so far. That may seem like something of a paradox to some of you (No pun intended.), but the basic premise is as simple as a time travel story can be.

Ashley is a total history nerd, whose love of studying the past leads to her recruitment into the TOA (Time Observers Agency). Headed by a mysterious, robed figure named Semita, their goal is to observe firsthand the mistakes of the past in order to make things better for the future. They are only to observe, though. They must never change anything.

Given little more than those instructions, Ashley takes her first trip, back to 17th century England, where she sees good, kind people being persecuted as witches. She also meets another mysterious man who knows who she is and why she’s there—and who doesn’t seem to have her best interests in mind.

This is a fun and interesting comic, but in reading it, I feel like there’s something I’ve missed. As I said, for the most part, it seems to be a fairly simple and straightforward time travel story—at times, almost too simple. Then, all of a sudden… I don’t want to say too much, as it would definitely be a spoiler, but… it sort of turns into a superhero story without any warning, and I’m at a complete loss to understand why or how. Maybe it’s something that will be explained in later issues, but it seems like something we’re just supposed to accept at face value. I guess we’ll find out.

If you look it up online, you’ll find this entire issue, plus the next two, on the comic’s website. There’s also a brief prologue, which I read. It details the origins of the TOA, and while it’s not at all necessary to the understanding of this first issue, it did provide some pretty cool background.

All in all, this is a pretty interesting sci-fi/fantasy story, and even at the parts I didn’t quite understand, it was still entertaining. There’s a lot of potential here, so we’ll see where it goes.
