‘Atomic Robo Presents: Real Science Adventures Volume 1’ – Advance Trade Paperback Review

A couple of months ago, I reviewed Real Science Adventures #1, which involved a group of female air pirates just after World War II. Unfortunately, I missed the subsequent issues, but I assumed that Volume 1 would collect them all so I could finish the story, which was addictively entertaining.

Somehow, however, this volume concerns itself with a completely different story. I was a little disappointed at first; however, on the very first page, we’re introduced to Nikola Tesla at the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, so my disappointment did not last long.

In this adventure, Nikola Tesla is the head of his own League of Extraordinary Gentleman-like super team, except that instead of literary characters, we get real historical figures – everyone from Annie Oakley to Harry Houdini, plus a few you’ll likely need to look up.

As the story begins, one of Tesla’s top secret, new inventions is stolen. In the wrong hands, it could cause massive amounts of chaos and destruction (much like most of Tesla’s inventions, actually). Therefore, the team needs to unite to discover who’s behind the theft and what their plan is, and stop them before anything bad happens.

The evil force behind the theft is a group of three wealthy industrialists calling themselves the Triumvirate. Using the technology stolen from Tesla, as well as some weapons of their own and a highly trained covert army, they plan on overthrowing the United States government to put the silly, failed “democracy” experiment out of its misery.

There’s a lot to like about this story. It’s packed with adventure, cool gizmos, and fascinating characters. Some of Tesla’s group are a bit further away from their real-life counterparts than others, but it hardly matters in the end. If your complaint about this comic is that it strains credulity, then you’re most definitely reading the wrong comic; however, if you’re up for some rip-roaring, action-packed science shenanigans with Nikola Tesla, then Real Science Adventures is for you.
