‘Ascender #18:’ Advance Comic Book Review

As we head into the last issue of the series, I have to say that it’s been a terrific ride, and I’ll miss this band of misfits who came together to save the universe. But as they say, all good things must come to an end.

With Mizard obliterated by the Ghiashian king, Mila takes up his staff and does what we all thought she could do from the start: magically blast those bad guys into a slag heap. Mother’s sister may have damaged Tim-21 beyond repair in her attack, but he played the long game and has one more trick up his sleeve: a machine ready to destroy her. Her arrogance leads to her downfall, as an old enemy uses the chaos to its advantage. But will it help Tim-21 and the other humans, humanoids, and droids, or spell the end of everything? And what role do Andy and Iffy play in all of this? And who will claim the power of The Forge? These questions will be answered, plus more.

This is another action-packed story where the theme of duality of magic and machine comes to a head. There’s a surprise I didn’t see coming, which was great and emphasized another important theme which resonated throughout the series: that all sentient beings are responsible for the choices they make. The flash forward at the beginning left me scratching my head, but the story wraps up nicely, and there are no loose threads to worry about.

I will give away one spoiler—bandit doesn’t die. Yay!
