‘The House of Lost Horizons: A Sarah Jewell Mystery #4’ – Advance Comic Book Review

With Mack dead and his wife drunkenly talking to an empty room, Sarah can’t help but feel sorry for her. But her generous nature is put to the test when she discovers Mr. Huang conjuring some sort of spell in front of the vault containing the estate’s antiquities. Ready to fight him, he disarms her and politely apologizes. He adamantly denies being the killer and says he is only there to take back a scroll that was stolen from his organization, The Golden Crane Society. Familiar with the organization and its members, Sarah is relieved to take one suspect off the list. Miss LaFleur, however, is still convinced Dr. Caliban is their prime suspect. That is until Sarah realizes they missed an important clue. Oh, and everyone is still having those weird dreams.

This extra-long issue includes some cool background story information on Mr. Huang and The Golden Crane Society, as well as Dr. Caliban which I don’t want to give away.  I will say my guess about Dr. Caliban being a detective was not quite correct, but the result is the same.  I also enjoyed the fact that both Sarah and Marie-Teresa can admit to their mistakes and move on. Though paranormal events have pretty much been on the periphery throughout the series, I like that it has been mostly implied rather than seen; however, in this issue, we are witness to Miss Loveland’s “sight.” To everyone’s amazement, she’s not a phony.

The twists at the end of issue have been fun and creative. This issue is no exception and one that I should have seen coming.  This has been a terrific story, and I look forward to seeing how it ends.
