Sarah Jewell and her traveling companion Miss La Fleur arrive on an island off the coast of Washington state during a terrible storm, only to discover that their host’s husband has been murdered. Originally asked to come and appraise a collection of occult objects, Miss Jewell and Miss La Fleur soon find themselves investigating the murder. The suspects include all of the guests who have arrived for the auction, as well as the long-time cook Mrs. Li. It isn’t long before everyone begins to act suspiciously and more bodies start dropping.
In a world often overrun by superheroes, this comic was a breath of fresh air. The art style is clean and gives us a good sense of the world. The paneling is such that I felt like we, as the reader, and the characters were being shifted around like pieces on a board game. There is also a touch of horror - nothing graphic - but enough to know something bad is going to happen to someone, we just don’t know who it will be. And like any good mystery, there are hints that everyone has a secret that they are not willing to share—at least not yet.
If you love classic mysteries with a dash of the supernatural, this is definitely for you.
