‘Pet Noir #1:’ Comic Book Review

Do you love cats? Detective stories?  Space operas? Then, Pet Noir has all that and more.  This all-ages comic based on the novel by Pati Nagle follows the adventures of the genetically engineered feline Leon.

Leon is brought to Gamma Station by Chief Wright to investigate a possible smuggling operation.  Capable of human speech and deductive reasoning, he is still just a kitten who has never experienced low gravity or rats, but has decided that his new partner Devin might not be the brightest bulb in the shed.  As the two learn about each other and Leon adapts to life away from his home, something more sinister might be happening right under their noses.

The story is fun and light. We get to experience the world through Leon’s eyes as he navigates his new environment.  There is just the right amount of setup so we understand what kind of world this is before we leap (no pun intended) into the action.  The coloring and the art fit the mood perfectly, and the artist has definitely nailed “sad kitty eyes.”   I also thought the employee performance review at the end of the issue was a hoot.

The entire series is complete and in trade paperback, so no worries about when the next issue will be out. I’d also add that this is the type of comic to get your kids hooked on a very different kind of superhero, especially if you’re a cat person.
