‘Spy Island #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

While there’s a mystery on every page, there’s also a joke on every panel in Spy Island #4. If you’ve ever wanted to know what the Bermuda Triangle might look like, this could very well be it. Basically, everything is attainable creatively, and Cain, Miternique, and McCall are up for the task of doing just about anything. Somehow, it makes perfect sense in the end.

Here’s why: The creative team creates their own absurd rules, and they stick to them. I laughed with and loved their characters from page one of issue one.

I would love to give you the synopsis of the story, but everything is so perfectly out of order that to even begin would be to sit here and untangle the minutiae. You kind of have to read the four-issue series! Vaguely, it has to do with a 1960s-esque super spy named Nora who is simply amazing. It has to do with mermaids that have pointy teeth. It has to do with a mime. It has to do with the kraken. It has to do with an army of sand fleas. Don’t ask, just read. It will all make sense.

This series is not afraid. It’s not afraid to not only be sexy, but also sexual. It’s not afraid to be sexual but to laugh at sex and allow Nora to enjoy it. In media, most female characters are sexy for the male reader’s gaze. They are almost puritanical in their sexuality. Nora’s sexuality is her own, and it is not just because she’s beautifully drawn. She owns every inch of it and basically everything else.

This series is sassy, silly, whimsical, witty, dry, exciting, ridiculous, and brilliant. I hope to everything I still believe in – as little as that may be – that Nora returns.
