‘Blackwood: The Mourning After #3’ – Comic Book Review

The team of Evan Dorkin and Veronica and Andy Fish are spinning a tale with multiple threads that inevitably will continue after next issue’s conclusion. There are just too many things at play, and they are all wonderful. I would hate to see any of them get short shrift.

The group of new students from the first series have been inextricably linked to a curse on the Blackwood school. If one falls, so shall the others. All but one of these fresh faces made it to the second story, but the deceased’s ghost is making the rounds. So, our remaining, curious, adventure-seeking outcasts decide to try and bring their friend back to life. Meanwhile, an outside force is posing a threat to the school, all while a Men in Black-like force has shown up to try and take over the school. Also, a two-headed monkey that belonged to the now-dead previous dean is missing… Zoinks, Scoob! That’s a lot of mystery and mayhem!

I love reading this series. I love the allusions to a Cthulu-like universe. I love that you really do feel like these kids are absolutely just trying to figure all of this out and they aren’t afraid to try something stupid to get it done…sounds about right for that age. #StoriesMatter because they can take something so absurd and ground it in a way that it’s going to feel as  real as it’s ever going to be. As a reader, this is a scenario I’d love to be a part of.

There is a jauntiness and a joy to the storytelling, like the creators are skipping through a field of black roses while putting this together. The purples and pinks in the design work really are the spark that starts that fire – so wonderfully goth! I’m happy that this is one of the first series I’m reviewing after the industry was put on pause.
