‘The Unicorn and the Fox #2-3:’ Comic Book Review

This comic kind of sneaks up on you. It can turn on a dime from “What’s going on?” to “What happens next?” Of course, it also switches back to “What’s going on?” just as easily. It’s not an easy journey, but it does make for a pretty intense ride.

In the first issue, we saw Buddy, the hornless unicorn, tasked with saving his home world of Glow when it was set upon by the evil Chancellor who sought to destroy it. We pick things up in issue #2 with Buddy trying desperately to figure out just how he’s supposed to do that—while the Chancellor’s army pursues him.

Against all odds, Buddy manages to evade capture and meet Finn, a fox from another world, who may hold the key to Buddy’s success and the salvation of Glow. If Finn can hold off the Chancellor’s soldiers, maybe, just maybe, Buddy can complete his mission.

This comic doesn’t provide a lot of backstory. The world that Nick Bain and Nick Acuna have created clearly has a long and detailed history, but we’re only treated to quick glimpses of it. Not that that’s a bad thing. Rather than going into detail, the story is instead painted in broad strokes that give us a general sense of people’s motives and goals without huge amounts of exposition. This is part of what makes it difficult to follow in places, but it also ensures we retain a general sense of what we’re moving towards, even if we’re not always sure what’s going on.

In an odd sort of way, this style of storytelling makes us feel a bit like Buddy does. We’re not always sure where we’re going or how we’re going to get there, and there are some pretty hard curveballs along the way. But it’s a wild and intense journey that will ultimately take us where we need to go. And even if not everything is explained, everything does, eventually, make sense. In the end, that’s what makes this a story worth reading, and a story that matters.
