‘Hellmouth #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Previously on Hellmouth #2, Buffy and Angel are deep in the Hellmouth, and it’s a good thing that they’re both handy to have around in a fight. Having fought through some of their deepest fears, they finally find Drusilla… but it appears that she isn’t in charge of the chaos after all?

So… coming in from the last issue, it’s pretty obvious that Drusilla has simply been a pawn this entire time for the Hellmother. Meanwhile, Angel’s vampire status is still a secret to Buffy, and you know that’s very likely going to come back to bite him in the ass. Angel meets an oracle that knows his deepest desire and tells him how he can achieve it, though it comes at a cost that Angel may not be willing to pay. Time will tell…

In this third issue of the crossover series, Jordie Bellaire and Jeremy Lambert continue to tell a focused story. While the actual big picture threat still feels a bit nebulous (since the Hellmother’s plans are mostly still of the vague fortune cookie variety), the stakes are pretty high, as Buffy and Angel are constantly in danger. Despite only having just met, there is a sense of trust between the two protagonists which brings us to the cliffhanger, which will probably change Buffy’s worldview forever. I do wish that the existential threat felt a bit more real, but kudos should be given for ratcheting up that shipper suspense. Aside from a couple of awkward cutaways that felt rather out of place, the writing should keep readers coming back for more.

Eleonora Carlini’s artwork is still dynamic and expressive. There are a couple of sequences that are a bit confusing at first, like when Buffy is beating up the figments of her imagination, but, in general, the proceedings are easy to follow. Cris Peter’s color work remains my favorite part of the artwork, adding so much ambience in a very subtle way. I wish Ed Dukeshire would just letter my life… I’d probably come across so much more eloquent than I probably am.

Overall, Hellmouth Pt. 3 feels a bit light on plot but hints at some serious drama to come.
