With the creative team of Jonathan Luna and Lauren Keely, 20XX is a new comic book series that establishes a future in divide. An apocalyptic virus has demolished most of the human race; however, those who survived the aftermath of the virus were able to achieve great feats of superpowers. This series serves as a blend of Children of the Earth and Akira.

In many regards, the black-and-white linework by Luna helps to encapsulate the thesis of this book. At first, it seems to act as a homage to the various Japanese dystopian manga, and it furthermore is representative of the chiaroscuro between the “black” and “white” of two opposing points. This being the sci-fi version of a new mutant’s companion called Syms. These syms are people who manifest superpowers but results in their being ostracized. The consistency of this artwork manages to pull off a fantastic abstraction of these themes with Luna’s pencils managing to capture the pacing.

This series is a collage of varied genres like cyberpunk, supernatural, romance, and drama. In earnest, it adds the unique voice found between both Jonathan Luna and Lauren Keely. In every way, this narrative provides a route for them to properly tread new ground through these familiar categories.
