‘Something Is Killing the Children #2:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The first issue of Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’edera introduced us to a dark and bloody situation as a group of kids were brutally ripped apart by a monster. Because it’s James Tynion IV, it was emotional and provocative, and artist Dell’edera showed these events to us in a viscerally arresting way. The survivor: a gay young man in high school named James. By the end of the issue, James meets a wickedly badass monster hunter named Erica Slaughter.

This second issue barely features the monster, but it doesn’t need to. Tynion’s writing draws you further into the emotional world of the characters, finding time to not only develop Erica and James to a greater degree, but also the older brother of one of the still missing girls: Tommy.

Tommy is the manager of a chain restaurant. He does not like Erica nor James, which snowballs in a way Erica seems prepared for but that the reader has no idea how she’s going to handle, especially given the final page of this issue.
There is a lot of story happening in just two issues, and it’s all perfectly, naturally laid out for the reader and dramatically enticing. It’s also really wonderfully drawn and colored. I feel like this series, especially considering Tynion’s other works with BOOM! Studios, brings high expectations. My recommendation to you is to dive in now while it’s still early on.
