‘Angel #4:’ Advance Comic Book Review

A quick recap of Angel #3: Having met Fred, Angel must travel to the hell dimension to confront the faceless foe he’s hunting. In the meantime, Fred learns of her destiny from Lilith.

Angel is in a hell dimension, and the best (worst?) hells are the ones that we populate with regrets and past sins. Catholic guilt is real, y’all! Wait, was Angel raised Catholic in this iteration? The point is, if you’ve ever spent a sleepless night because you dreamed that you stole a bottle of shampoo (I’m not even Catholic!), imagine what Angel’s hell looks like. Or read this issue. On the other side, Fred gets an upgrade from Lilith who’s quickly becoming an intriguing favorite of mine.

Bryan Edward Hill closes out Angel’s first arc in spectacular fashion. It may seem like world building, but that’s what has me excited here. We’re not just taking old familiar faces and their history and baggage for granted. Instead, we’re being properly reintroduced to them, and that’s how you come correct, in my opinion. The big revelations aren’t exactly unexpected if you’ve been reading along, so the two familiar faces aren’t going to be shocking, but they will feel like coming home to a warm embrace of familiarity of sorts.

I’ve really loved Gleb Melnikov’s work on this series so far, and I really hope he’s here to stay for a while. Melnikov’s visuals really get that noir feel that the original series had going for it, albeit without the special effects budget. His work really sells that this is a re-imagining of a past beloved series, updating where needed but keeping what worked before. As for the colors, I find the transition to Roman Titov’s work to be quite subtle. In fact, I kind of like that he colors Angel in ashier tones, because . . . ya know, he’s a vampire. I’ll also keep singing Ed Dukeshire’s praises. I really appreciate how he keeps text boxes consistent across issues, because it really does help the reader identify who’s speaking, especially when it’s a disembodied voice in a scene with active speakers.

Overall, Team Angel has sorta been spelled out for us, and I can’t wait to see how this new team will coalesce and butt heads.
