‘Hellboy and the B.P.R.D: The Beast of Vargu’ – Advance Comic Book Review

Here’s me continuing not to complain that we get more Hellboy stories from Mike Mignola. I sincerely love this world so very much. The esoteric magic is beautiful, and all of the elements I love about the big red guy are on display in this one-shot. There’s a brutal fight that Hellboy “harrumphs” his way through. There’s also a strange magical force that finds its way into the story and shows itself through a very unexpected and playful visual device. The great thing is that the visual device fits in perfectly with the purveyor of that magic.

Duncan Fegredo does a wonderful job of bringing this story to life, and Dave Stewart’s colors are always welcome. From the cover to the last page, it’s a really gorgeous comic. I love that every artist that comes in and leaves a mark on Hellboy does so while still capturing the spirit of it all. A Hellboy skeleton will always look like a Hellboy skeleton. Nowhere else do I see a skeleton that look like this. Even when they are dead and unmoving (Yes, some of the skeletons are quite alive.), they still have a presence, like they are watching Hellboy’s every move.

There’s a certain ease with which Mignola tells these stories now, maybe because there’s no pressure. If he has an idea, he puts it out there. The great thing is that Hellboy stories can happen anytime, anywhere. Hellboy is the equivalent of a ronin. He has no masters. Whatever the mythology, whatever the fairytale, Hellboy can leave his mark. It’s truly wonderful, and I’m glad I live in a world in which Hellboy stories are still being published.
