Mike Mignola, along with a handful of top-notch talents, bring three short stories to this year’s Winter Special. Mignola and Ben Stenbeck put Hellboy in the middle of a séance that goes horribly wrong in the best of possible ways. Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba have a tie-in to a B.P.R.D. story (which I have not read, but now I’m incredibly intrigued), and Lobster Johnson returns in the capable hands of Tonci Zonjic. It’s a special thing when you put down a comic and all you want is more.

There is more love for the characters and the world of Hellboy than in almost any other comic I read. The creators always bring their best, capturing that spark of life that exists in this universe, that carries it off the pages of the comic and into our larger imaginations. Every chance I get to step into this world, I hungrily anticipate and accept. There’s a simple beauty to this world like there is with fairy tales and mythologies. Like with Hellboy, by taking things at face value, the creators are simply able to have as much fun as they want, and I feel like I’m being given the best present when a new Hellboy story graces my world.
