‘Bone Parish #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Just when things could not get more exciting in the world of The Ash, the Winters family and those battling for control of their drug empire have a few surprises in store.

Bone Parish #3: Phantom’s Breath has more than enough twists and turns to keep readers addicted. The Ash, created by the Winters family, is a hot, new, hallucinogenic drug made from the ashes of the dead, and it seems to come with a few more side effects than someone seeking a trip bargained for.

Now that we’ve gotten to know the players, writer Cullen Bunn moves the story forward at light-speed. There’s little time to breathe from bad situation to worse situation. Those who want The Ash are closing in on the Winters and fast. New side effects of The Ash are revealed, and they aren’t for the faint of heart. We also get to see some more of the effects that make The Ash so popular. While Grace is keeping one enemy at bay in her own way, others are after her via her children. Brigitte continues to surprise readers with her efforts at producing the drug and her own personal usage.

There’s not much that the creators of Bone Parish can do wrong, and this third installment of the series proves that. Between the writing and the art, this is a binge-worthy comic series. Artist Jonas Scharf delivers another stunning piece of work, with panel after panel shining and carrying a fantastic story. The disturbing effects of The Ash continue to be completely believable in the hallucination scenes, bringing a higher level of horror to the comic. And, the crawdaddy panels at the beginning of the comic: Let’s just say people eating them already creeped me out, but now I don’t ever want to see someone eat one again! When the artist can make the reader squeamish, it’s top-notch, realistic work.

Bone Parish #3: Phantom’s Breath is proof that when you have the right creative team in place, a series can stay fresh with each new issue, and new ideas can come to life with absolute perfection.
