‘Doctor Star and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

There’s a great moment, a sort of getting splashed in the face with cold water moment, in Issue #3 of Doctor Star and the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows. We get to see our Golden Age hero, Doctor Star, come face to face with the realities of Vietnam. It’s not lingered on, but that moment says everything about the Black Hammer universe. There was an innocence about the Golden Age of comics which our heroes lived in on a meta-reference level, and now they have to deal with the harsh, post-modern, psychological tortures of our current times.

The other theme that runs strong throughout the Black Hammer universe is one of family, and loved ones, and the loss of innocence in these regards, or maybe better defined: the loss of connection. The loss of connection with who you are, what you love, and what makes you… you. Is it the fact that these characters were superheroes that made them who they were, or was there something greater that they let slip by? With every issue, these ideas are expanded upon, and Doctor Star is the epitome of these themes.

In this current issue, with his son dying of cancer, Doctor Star leaves to contact the alien race he saved, in hopes that their healing powers can save his son’s life, only to find that since he was gone, the aliens have found a way to stoke Doctor Star’s ego, which drove his early superhero days. The question is, what will he choose: his ego or his son?

Once again, the art, the look, and the feel of the book are wonderful, and I am undeniably anxious to find out how this story wraps back into the main Black Hammer book.
