‘Rick & Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #2’ – Advance Comic Book Review

In the latest issue to the adaptation of the mobile game based on the hit television show, Rick & Morty, we find more trouble in the alternate reality where Mortys are captured and forced to fight one another for the amusement and sport of the many, many Ricks out there in the world. As we follow the One True Morty (or at least that’s who it seems to be), this world begins to get much more complicated, and far more bizarre, in true Rick & Morty form. With the popularity of the show, and despite it only beginning to air its third season, Pocket Like You Stole It already draws from a very deep and diverse history of the alternate realities, and multiple different forms, of our beloved protagonists.

While the game this series is based on plays basically like a themed Pokemon emulation, this series delves further into the mythology of Morty collection, and the horrors of the sport. As Morty continues to try to free his brethren from the evil clutches of one of the many Ricks, he finds the whole situation a lot more confusing, and a lot more complex than he originally anticipated.

The way that this show, and any subsequent media that spawns from it, is portrayed can be rather off-putting. It’s always a bit off-kilter, using several pop culture references, odd allusions, and the occasional moment of body horror to bring about a response, and this series is no different. While the creative team here isn’t directly related to the show, they bring about the same kind of weirdness that the show does.

Writer Tini Howard, artist Marc Ellerby and colorist Katy Farina do an excellent job of emulating the ethos of the show, and the art team did a great job of bringing about the visual style of the show, as well. Everything looks like it should, the characters act as they should, and while it’s not a one-to-one comparison, this is a wonderful way to experience a little extra Rick & Morty.
