‘Fwendly Fwuit: Winter Wonders’ – Comic Book Review

Writer, artist, and graphic designer Mickey Lam first made his mark as an independent comic book creator with the quirky Mr. Yang Fights Aliens.  For indie creators and especially multi-hyphenate indie creators, it takes time to develop, create, and produce new works, which is why it is so wonderful to see those creators return with exciting, new projects.  Lam has done exactly that this year with the release of his all-ages adventure comic, Fwendly Fwuit: Winter Wonders, and the new comic is an adorable and fun read for young audiences to enjoy.

Fwendly Fwuit introduces readers to an alternate reality where anthropomorphic fruit – including cuddly families of bananas and an energetic strawberry – and endearing, diminutive creatures frolic and play while celebrating Christmas Day.  During their adventures and merry-making, our banana and strawberry pals happen across a wee alien who has lost his friend and needs help to find her.  Throughout the journey to find the missing friend, the group encounters all sorts of (young reader-friendly) peril, but rest assured that their search ends victoriously.

The dialogue of the comic is wonderful for very young readers (ages 3-7) to grasp and become invested in, and the artwork brightly displays Lam’s lovable creatures in an exciting adventure that is sure to maintain the attention of even the most energetic of readers.  Lam, as writer and artist, continues to show progress in his creative work from his initial debut in Mr. Yang Fights Aliens, and it would appear that the all-ages market and cartoonish style greatly suit his artistic abilities.

Hats off to Lam for his successful return to the indie comic book community with Fwendly Fwuit, and I look forward to seeing where his artistic endeavors take him next.
