‘All-New Firefly: Big Damn Finale #1’ – Comic Book Review

It’s all come down to the Big Damn Finale! What is this finale? The best denouement for this series in which we see the crew move forward and wrap up our Jayne-centric story in a poignant way. With loose ends to wrap up with delicate diplomacy between the different factions on Requiem and farewells to say, things are tenuous in a much quieter way.

David M. Booher’s run on this series has been a revelation! Jayne has always seemed like an unlikely (anti)hero, but it’s been nice to see him featured extensively in this series. Extending the Cobb family to give him more nuance and context was well done and executed in a lovely fashion.

Simona Di Gianfelice’s closes out the run in grand fashion, with some incredibly emotional character beats and epic backdrops. The characters have so much “feeling” to them and while highly stylized, their body language feels very natural. The colorwork by Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli is beautiful as per yoosh, whether it’s depicting the coldness of space or the warmth of Inara’s shuttle. Jim Campbell’s excellent lettering is on full display here. I don’t want to give anything away, but the way he depicts static to break up a monologue is pretty awesome.

Overall, this is an amazing capper to a wonderful series. Despite its short run, it’s managed to transform a much-maligned character into someone new while respecting his trajectory throughout the years.
