‘Wynd #7:’ Advance Comic Book Review

The chase continues as complications compound and the stakes (’cause we’re dealing with Vampyres) swiftly rise!

Issue #7 adds some more characters into the mix, including Teek (using they/them pronouns) who is delightful. Teek is just excited to be there. We get to know Bastian a little more who could very well become the next Prince. Also re-entering the playing field are two father figures: Ash who is Thorn’s dad, and Titus who worked at the restaurant that Wynd previously hid at.

Meanwhile, Oakley and Wynd witness some atrocities and seem to be walking into even greater danger.

There are some really great writers in the comic book industry right now, but none so acrobatic in dealing with different genres and tones as Tynion IV. Each of his books feels distinct; he veers from young adult fantasy (here), to hyper violent allegorical horror, then to whimsical sci-fi, and over to Batman without skipping a beat. But with each book, his focus on character and thematic resonance remains strong, elevating his already wonderful stories to another level.

Michael Dialynas’ artwork is so much fun. This is a world in which our characters are surrounded by danger, and Dialynas really lets us see that fact in their faces. This group is stressed as they should be!

This creative team is making high-stakes political power-mongering fun and relevant. And Vampyres! If you love fantasy adventure, it’s never too late to jump in!

Creative Team: James Tynion IV (writer), Michael Dialynas (artist), Andworld Design (letters), Scott Newman (logo designer) Grace Park (designer), Eric Harburm (editor), Gwen Waller and Ramiro Portnoy (assistant editor)
