‘Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #3’ – Advance Comic Book Review

The tone of each of the Outerverse books from Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden vary ever so slightly. Joe Golem was a film noir, Cojacaru was a WWII war story, and Lady Baltimore is a swashbuckling, Indiana Jones-style high adventure. All three are connected by one thing: witches and a realm called The Outer Worlds, where Cthulhu-inspired old gods exist.

Lady Baltimore and Cojacaru both take place during WWII in an alternate reality during which dark witches have teamed up with Nazis. We haven’t really seen a lot of Nazis, but this series is chalk full of witches. Alongside Lady Baltimore is a friend/lover who calls herself Imogen.

For the first two issues of this series, the only thing missing for me was the fact that I didn’t believe our heroes could ever come out of a situation on top. I wasn’t afraid for them, even when they were overwhelmed or hanging from the outside of a plane. That is an element to high adventure. I’m sure people never believed for a second Errol Flynn was ever in danger. That has changed with issue three.

The witches are no longer shooting from the hip, but they seem to have some kind of plan, cornering our group of overwhelmed heroes in a town they would not enter. Now, Lady Baltimore, Imogen, a priest with a scar across his face, and a few others have a risky plan that involves a recognizable character.

Just like with the Joe Golem series, I’m buying 100% into the love story. So few comic series really focus on such interesting dynamics, actually leaning into it, finding the perfect moments for a passionate exchange of words between the two women who are still finding their way together. It’s really wonderful.

Right along with the other Outerverse titles, I give this a hearty thumbs up!
