‘The Amazing Adventures of Bart Bartson and Demolition Dinosaur #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Synopsis: Bart Bartson is probably in the last place he wants to be: a foster home run by an oppressive tyrant and terrorized by the resident bully. But a fateful encounter with a toy T-rex may just change his life and outlook on life.

The Amazing Adventures of Bart Bartson and Demolition Dinosaur #1 is an intriguing start to the series written by Don Borgmeyer. It has elements of A Little Princess mingled with some classic Calvin and Hobbes. While it isn’t particularly “new,” Borgmeyer’s handling of a delicate matter toes the balance between denial and delusion and will definitely be a point of tension in the future. What Borgmeyer does really well here is exemplifying why #StoriesMatter: They can allow for the exploration of grief and moving on in seemingly simplistic ways, which allow us to process the vast complexity of those emotions in more modular fashion.

Borgmeyer’s sensitive script is enhanced by Kelsi Jo Silva’s evocative visuals. The linework is deceptively simple as it’s really expressive, and the little details like the reflection of Bart’s expression in the car window just have so much gravity to them. The color palette stays generally neutral, but there are pops of brightness in Bart’s imagination and I don’t think that’s unintentional at all. Toben Racicot’s lettering is effective, and the letters are well-placed and never come at the sacrifice of the action.

Overall, I think that we’re off to a great start, and I can’t wait to see the shenanigans that Bart and Demolition Dinosaur will get up to. I also would like to see more of Bart’s interactions with the other foster kids, especially with Max, who also seems to be dealing with a lot of his own trauma.
