Matt Kindt and Tyler and Hilary Jenkins’ Fear Case has been a smart and character-driven way to distill those themes into a hard-boiled, LA noir, Lovecraftian puzzle box as our two Secret Service agents try to track down an almost mythological and incredibly elusive brief case that has been cursed with a dark power.
The question at the center of this story isn’t simply "what is fear?" but instead "what does fear inspire us to do?" The almost singular rule behind the case is the most telling thematic statement about this story and about how fear affects us in the real world.
Do our characters find the case? Or does the case find them? You’ll have to read to find out, but I guarantee you that will be the question that matters least when you’re finished reading it!
