This issue doesn’t jump the story ahead too far, but it does give us a clear idea as to what The Order can do, and it does set up Erica for her next big move. This only has me anxious for the next issue!
Tynion IV and Dell’edera prove time and time again in this series that they are not treating their characters preciously; anyone’s time could be up at any moment. There are minor tragedies in every issue that creep up to the surface, like a sort of trash compactor slowly closing in on our leads.
It wasn’t the violence that affected me so much in this issue, but the internal pain of one of the main characters that has been with us since the beginning. As a young gay man, James didn’t fit in. He was someone who was teased and bullied, yet somehow he’s the one who brought the monsters to this town. He is aching inside with guilt. This is an element to the story that isn’t quite clear to me both in a literal and metaphorical level, but something tells me we’re about to find out how all of it fits together. It has to, because it’s pretty obvious that the creators have been touching on some pretty dicey issues over the last twenty years, that of violence within our school system. Thematically, I can’t wait to see what the final word will be and am anxious to see the emotional payoff. Will it be ultimately tragic? Hopeful? Or a bit of both?
