‘Spy Island #3:’ Advance Comic Book Review

You know how in spy and espionage movies the characters seem to set up an impossible series of things in advance, so just when you think they’re done for, we see a flashback of all the stuff they set up or already thought of just so they can make it out of the current, very specific situation and we’re always meant to think, “Oh, wow, clever!”, when really it’s absolutely absurd? Well, Chelsean Cain and Lia Miternique just sent that trope up in a blaze of beautiful glory while still staying 100% faithful to the super spy and mermaid-laden world they’ve created.

Nothing seems to happen by accident when Nora, our super spy, is involved. The first two issues of the series have been a wonderful pastiche of absurd humor and wonderful character development, with Nora remaining just as mysterious to us as she was to everyone else. Now, with the opening line, “The mime was collateral damage,” we finally get to peer into Nora’s hyper-intelligent head.  We also start to understand why she’s on the island and what the heck is going on, and it’s still just as fun.

This is such a uniquely well put together series; it’s genuinely inspired – from the design and the ’60s-inspired look and feel, to the beautiful art from Elise Mccall, to how intelligent these characters are portrayed.

Spy Island caught me completely off guard with its first issue and with each issue since. This could very well be one of my favorite reads of the year.
