‘Ascender #12:’ Comic Book Review

I’m so glad I took the time to read the prequel series, Descender, because it seriously pays off in this latest issue of Ascender.  I’m not going to ruin it for you, but if you started to read this series without reading the previous one, then I highly suggest you dive into it before reading issue #12. Now, on to the show…

Devastated by the death of his wife Effy, Andy reflects on their life together as he prepares to bury her.  Once done, he is overjoyed when she is resuscitated by her cyborg-half. (And no, this is not the spoiler I was referring to.) But their heartfelt reunion is over quickly when vampires attack. Meanwhile, Mother – who is once again a child due to her sister’s magic – returns to their source of power with her sister only to discover that it’s not what they thought it would be. (Okay, that’s the big ending I was referring to.)

This issue starts out slowly, giving us time to feel Andy’s pain, but picks up with a nice action sequence and an introduction to a new character who I’m guessing will be important later. My first impression while reading it was that the story was going to weave in continuing subplots, which it did. I thought it was going to be a boring issue; however, it ended up doing so much more.  (Yes, they tricked us.)

The coloring is more somber than usual which reinforces Andy’s grief, as well as the turmoil of Mother’s life.  It also explains why we get all of the color at the end.

Nicely done, team. This issue reminds us never to take anyone for granted.  Now, I have to go buy the next trade volume of Ascender for the hubby.
