‘ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria for the End Times’ – Advance Hardcover Review

I remember when the original paperback edition of ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria for the End of Times came out around six years ago. I was, at the time, in my local comic book shop weekly, always on the hunt for something new and different, when it’s bright lime green cover caught my eye. I was so drawn to it that I picked it up immediately.

The story follows a young woman, Aria, who loves to sing classic arias to her only companion, her cat Jelly Beans. Aria is living on an Earth post-apocalypse; it is no longer a toxic-filled wasteland, but the ruins of a city covered in lush, green nature. She is not just here surviving this planet; she is on a mission. She has been given the task of finding an ancient relic with the ability to give power to an entire world. In the wrong hands, of course, this power can be deadly. Andrew MacLean’s modern, sketchy art lends well to the story he is telling. The pages are full of action sequences with Aria, Jelly Beans, and her cool-looking motorbike, as she has to fight and get past obstacles to find the relic.

I love this book, because not only is it a post-apocalyptic story (one of my favorite genres), it is utterly and completely relatable. Obviously, I don’t live in this type of world (yet!), but I can relate to Aria herself. She is fun and funny, always talking to her cat, and having a consistent internal (and external) monologue and tries to find a positive spin. She audibly questions her own actions in tough situations and has a good moral compass, something she sometimes has to sacrifice to survive. Aria is a wonderful character that you root for who feels like someone you know.

For those who may have read the paperback and are asking, “Why should I pick up the hardcover edition?” Let me help you out. This new hardcover edition has an extra 48 pages of alternate covers, art, and two more stories. Yep! I won’t spoil it for you, but it has a prequel and a short sequel story, as well.

ApocalyptiGirl is a vibrant and accessible story of a young woman on a mission. I highly recommend it for fans of post-apocalyptic stories, light humor, and girl power books like Nimona.
