‘Firefly #11:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Quick recap from the last issue: Inara’s still trying to use her diplomatic clout to save lives, but herding cats seems to be a more plausible life goal. Wash and Book are trying to stop the Browncoats from all-out war, while Simon, River, and Kaylee are stuck with Jayne and his latest great idea. Mal, Zoe, and Boss Moon’s attempt at calming down the other Browncoats is abruptly derailed by the arrival of Ma Reynolds, Mal’s tough-as-nails mother.

Ma Reynolds is quickly taking charge, proving she is a force to be reckoned with. A brief reunion of the crew is truncated by the inevitability of the Second Unification War. Romance is sparked in one couple but may be on the waning side for another.

In the penultimate issue of the third arc, it would appear that the Second Unification War has a gravitational pull of its own, and no one is safe from it. In playing the long game, Greg Pak has built on the ‘Verse admirably, adding unique characters to the mix while honoring our big damn heroes. Even though we know the ultimate fate of these characters, it’s hard to not feel the stakes here, and that’s a major achievement on Pak’s part.

Dan McDaid’s work has been solid throughout his run so far, and Issue #11 is no different. Marcelo Costa’s colors beautifully complement McDaid’s rugged linework, especially in establishing tone and the energy of a scene. Reading through this book feels like watching an episode of the TV series, because the visuals and text just meld so organically that the story flows easily from panel to panel, page to page. Jim Campbell’s contribution to that ease cannot be overstated; his lettering just makes for easy reading which is crucial in the fast-paced scenes.

Overall, that final panel is a shipper paradise! Ma Reynolds is a pistol, and everyone else is either in her sights or shooting at her. I can’t wait to see how this is all going to resolve itself in the arc finale.
