‘Everything #2:’ Advance Comic Book Review

Everything is a fever dream: a psychosomatic journey for all of its character; a mystery that doesn’t show what exactly it is that we should be trying to figure out.

I can’t clearly talk about the story, as there’s no single through line yet. It’s a series of events wrapped around the opening of a new store called Everything and the characters which inhabit Holland, Michigan, who are drawn in and ensnared by the magic that won’t let them go.

Lieutenant Dunbar (who is terribly depressed), Remo (a young man who gets a job at Everything), Eberhard Friendly (the city manager), the salesman at a stereo store, Shirley (who is a manager of sorts at Everything), and some more. Weird events and deaths begin to occur. The characters are being affected not only by the products at Everything, but sounds they hear and music that’s played.

As artist, I.N.J. Culbard captures that hypnotic rhythm from panel to panel. The hallucinations of the characters really sink in, and you begin to feel emotional even though you’re really not sure why!

Cantwell is a really interesting writer. In some ways, like creator Matt Kindt, he wants you to experience the feeling of the book. Cantwell’s writing makes it seem that feeling the story may be more important than following the story, so you’re left with a truly strange and heightened experience, one that might be just a little unsettling.

His work is really worth checking out. This is as good a place to start as any!
